September is Workforce Development Professionals Month, a time to celebrate the people who work every day to connect individuals, employers, educators, community organizations and resources to opportunities.

As the CEO of the Spokane Workforce Council, I have the privilege of seeing firsthand the incredible work happening across our region. And I can say without hesitation: our workforce development professionals are some of the most dedicated, innovative and mission-driven people in our community.

They are the people behind the scenes helping a job seeker find a career pathway, helping an employer find the talent they need, helping a young person envision a future they may not have thought possible, and bringing organizations together to solve workforce problems that no single organization can solve alone.

The workforce landscape is changing rapidly. Employers are navigating evolving skill requirements, technology, demographic shifts and persistent talent challenges. Workers are looking for meaningful careers, opportunities to advance and pathways that provide economic stability. That means our work cannot simply be about filling today’s jobs. We have to build tomorrow’s workforce.

At the Spokane Workforce Council, we are focused on doing exactly that and doing it differently. Our current priorities reflect what we are hearing from employers, educators, workforce professionals and community leaders throughout Spokane County.

One of our greatest opportunities is to create a workforce system that works more seamlessly together; with shared goals, aligned strategies and a common vision for the future. There are incredible organizations doing incredible work throughout our community. Our challenge, and our opportunity, is to connect those efforts so that the whole system becomes greater than the sum of its parts.

Workforce development professionals are uniquely positioned to help bridge that gap by bringing employers to the table, understanding their real-world needs and creating training and talent solutions that respond directly to those needs.

That means thinking beyond traditional training models and embracing skills-based approaches, work-based learning, career pathways and stronger connections between education and employment. When we connect people to education, skills, careers and employers, we can help break cycles of generational poverty and create opportunities for individuals and families to build a stronger future. That is the transformational power of our work.

And none of this happens without workforce professionals.

Behind every successful workforce initiative is a person who made the connection. A career navigator who helped someone realize their goals. An employer engagement specialist who listened to a business owner. A trainer who helped someone discover a new skill. An educator who opened a door. A community partner who brought people to the table. A leader who said, “There has to be a better way.”

Those people are workforce development professionals. And this month, I want to say thank you. Thank you for your persistence. Thank you for your creativity. Thank you for your willingness to collaborate. Thank you for believing in people and our community. And most importantly, thank you for understanding that workforce development is not simply about jobs. It is about people. It is about businesses. It is about families. It is about economic opportunity. And ultimately, it is about the future of our community.

Let’s take time to celebrate, and let’s keep building. I am incredibly proud of the workforce professionals across Spokane County and throughout the Inland Northwest. I am even more excited about what we can accomplish together. The challenges facing our workforce are significant. But so are the opportunities.

If we continue to break down silos, align our efforts, listen to employers, invest in people, strengthen career pathways and work together toward shared goals, we can build a workforce system that is more connected, more responsive and more innovative than ever before.

So, to every workforce development professional who gets up each day and works to create opportunity: This month is for you. You are connecting people to possibilities. You are connecting businesses to talent. You are connecting education to careers. You are connecting our community to its future. And at the Spokane Workforce Council, we are proud to stand alongside you.
