For the first time ever, the NonStopLocal KHQ/WorkSource Job Fair will have an onsite activity room for children, allowing parents looking for work to engage with employers and the 1,500+ job openings that will be available. Thanks to Spokane County and Reconnect2Work for making this offering possible!

Activities will be provided by Vanessa Behan in large meeting rooms inside the Convention Center near the entrance to the exhibit halls.

Please review the FAQs below. If there are any further questions, please submit them here:

WHO IS OPERATING THE ACTIVITIES?

Vanessa Behan is a local non-profit licensed by the state of Washington to provide short-term, emergent care 24/7 to children from newborn through age 12. All staff and volunteers are extensively background-checked and trained.  For more information on all programs and locations, please visit vanessabehan.org

WHAT WILL BE ASKED OF ME?

We will ask for some demographic information (names, ages, date of birth, etc.) some is helpful simply to track you and your child, other information is helpful for seeking funding for programs like this offered by Vanessa Behan. We will also want to know about your child or children so we can take really good care of them while you are away (allergies, health conditions, bottles, etc.). We will ask for an emergency contact. This is someone that you authorize to pick up your child on the off chance you are unable. Regardless of who picks up your child, we will ask for picture identification to ensure we send children home with the right person. We will also ask you to sign a form acknowledging our pick-up agreement, authorizing emergency medical treatment, first aid, and CPR as well as acknowledging that our staff are mandated reporters.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A PICTURE ID?

We can work with you to find some sort of way to identify you and your child. This will likely be several steps. First, we will have you assign a code word that will be asked of you or your emergency contact. We will also provide you and your child with a matching ID bracelet that will be confirmed upon pick up. There may be a few other ways we can work together to ensure we have the best way possible to ensure we have the right adult and child matched together.

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE AN EMERGENCY CONTACT?

We do this for your protection. While it is highly unlikely that something will happen during their short stay, we want to provide as many options to you and your child. We hope you will think about worst-case scenario and leave at least one person’s contact information that you trust. However, it will not prevent you from leaving your child. Please know that we will make every effort to contact you before our last option of calling child protective services (CPS).

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A CELL PHONE?
    • If you are attending the job fair with another person, we will accept their cell phone number as a way to contact you.
    • If you are the only adult attending the job fair with no cell phone, we will use the convention center’s overhead intercom to page you to the job fair’s check-in desk to meet a job fair volunteer who will escort you to the children’s activity room.
    • If we cannot find you in an emergency, we may have no option but to make decisions without your input.

Again, we don’t anticipate a need to reach you during the short stay but want to provide you and your child with the best options.

WHAT DO I NEED TO BRING?

Please bring any essentials your child will need while in our care for the duration of their stay. This may include bottles, formula, diapers, wipes, change of clothing, bib, pacifier, blanket, and other items of comfort. Because we are providing these services outside of our facility, we will not have access to our normal items. We do ask parents to diaper/toilet children before drop off to limit our staff from needing to step away. We will do our absolute best to return all items. With that in mind, please do not bring any valuable items as we cannot be responsible for lost or missing items.

WHAT IF MY CHILD NEEDS A DIAPER CHANGE OR BATHROOM?

Please change your child’s diaper or take them to the bathroom prior to registration. This will help reduce the need for staff and volunteers to step away from the larger group of children. If a child needs to be changed or use a bathroom, we will first try to contact the parent to come back to the children’s area to help. If we cannot wait for a parent, two adults will accompany a child to the nearest restroom and will assist as needed.

WILL MY CHILD BE FED?

To avoid allergy issues and the need to transport too many items, we will not be providing food or snacks. We will have water available for children as needed. We will be happy to feed infants as long as items are brought by the parent and are in ‘ready to use’ condition. We will have water to add to the formula and the ability to warm bottles but will not have the ability to warm food or serve items.

HOW LONG CAN MY CHILD STAY?

We will be open for the duration of the event, 11a-2p. To maximize your time at the job fair, we will begin accepting children at 10:45a. We ask that you pick up your child by 2:15p. We will attempt to call you first and then will move to your authorized other contact. While we certainly don’t anticipate children being left behind, our final option is to notify Child Protective Services of child abandonment.

IS VANESSA BEHAN CONNECTED TO CHILD PROTECTIVE SERVICES (CPS or DCYF)?

No. We are not connected to CPS in any way. However, just like other child-serving organizations, we are Mandated Reporters. This means any signs or reportable concerns are an obligation of the Vanessa Behan staff to report. We want to honor our relationships with families and will do our best to address concerns or reporting needs together with you.

Our generous parking sponsor Manpower Spokane is providing free parking to the first 350* vehicles that enter the Doubletree/Convention Center Parking Garage.

>> Please review the directions to the Doubletree/Convention Center Parking Garage here and view other public parking options nearby.

*The Doubletree/Convention Center Parking Garage is a public parking garage. Vehicles parked in the garage may belong to parties that are not attending the job fair. The 350 free parking spots will only be available until the garage is full. Rates and availability for other parking options nearby are not affiliated with this event and may result in “event” parking fees.

Parking

This year our generous parking and transportation sponsors, Davenport Hotels and STA, are providing free and reduced transportation options for our attendees. You can take advantage of several options:

  1. Park in the Davenport Grand Parking Lot. Bring your parking ticket with you to registration – while supplies last, we will be providing pre-paid exit tickets provided by our Parking Sponsor, Davenport Hotels. Click here for a map. The first 250 attendees who bring in their parking ticket from that lot will receive a pre-paid exit ticket.
  2. Park for free at the Spokane Arena, in parking lot B. Click here for map. Free parking at the Arena is unlimited. While supplies last, WorkSource staff will be on site providing STA bus passes for attendees that park at the Arena. Catch the downtown shuttle, STA Route 11, which runs every 5 minutes and will  drop you off less than a block from the event, at the Washington @ Spokane Falls Boulevard stop. See map of Route 11 here.

Please note that free parking at the Davenport Grand and bus passes are limited and are available first-come, first served. Please ensure you will be able to pay for your vehicle or bus pass if necessary. Davenport Grant lot rates are $6/vehicle, and the Doubletree Lot is $8/vehicle.
